Everest attracts AIG/Sompo leader for top global underwriting post
Global re/insurer Everest Re Group has tapped an industry veteran with extensive experience in companies like Berkshire Hathaway, AIG, Sompo, and Tokio Marine in the insurance sector, as well as a strong background in broking with Guy Carpenter and Marsh. The executive will assume the top global underwriting position at Everest Insurance.
Mark Maritzen (pictured) has joined the company as global chief underwriting officer of Everest Insurance, the insurance division of Everest Re Group. He is based in New York and reports to unit president and CEO Mike Karmilowicz.
Maritzen replaces Mike Mulray who was recently appointed as president of North America Insurance.
An industry veteran with more than 25 years of global re/insurance experience having worked in multiple countries, Maritzen was most recently at Berkshire Hathaway Re managing and underwriting all property program business. Prior to that, he was chief underwriting officer for property North America at AIG where he led the development of underwriting strategy and guidelines for both Retail and Wholesale Property across the US.
Maritzen also served as head of US property for both Endurance Insurance/Sompo International and Tokio Marine Global and has held positions of increasing responsibility at Guy Carpenter and Marsh.
In his new role, Maritzen will oversee all aspects of global underwriting for Everest Insurance, from defining risk appetite and underwriting guidelines to portfolio management, price setting and knowledge sharing, working with the company’s regional chief underwriting officers to drive underwriting excellence and global alignment.
Karmilowicz said: “Mark is a proven leader, with the technical expertise and established track record of developing best-in-class, global underwriting teams. Underwriting excellence is the core of our business, and I am confident that with Mark’s oversight, we will continue to elevate our global function, delivering the highest standard of quality and service our clients depend on from Everest.”
