Top Hamilton leader and founding member heads for rival Vantage

The group chief risk officer of  Hamilton Insurance Group has left the firm to join Bermudian rival Vantage.

Pete Skerlj (Pictured) has joined specialty re/insurer Vantage Group Holdings, while Alex Baker has been promoted to group chief risk officer at Hamilton replacing him.

Baker will assume his new role within the firm on January 1, 2023, Skerlj will join Vantage effective February.

Skerlj joined Hamilton Insurance in 2012 from Q Re Bermuda Advisors, where he was head of analytics. Prior to that, he held various positions at Lancashire Insurance Company, PartnerRe, and Applied Research Associates.

In this new role, Skerlj will lead the further development of Vantage’s data-driven enterprise risk management framework to strengthen its risk and economic capital modeling, leveraging technology to drive risk assessment, modeling, and analytics.

Skerlj will be based in Bermuda and report to Greg Hendrick, Vantage’s chief executive officer, who described Skerlj as “a creative thinker who has a demonstrated track record of designing risk frameworks for start-up and fast-growing businesses.”

“He has the rigor to ensure the sustainable, long-term resiliency of Vantage,” Hendrick said. “With his technical expertise and track record in risk management, economic capital modeling and reserving we’re pleased to have Peter join us in this vital role.”

Hamilton Group CEO Pina Albo commented: “As a founding member of Hamilton, Pete set up our risk and actuarial function and helped build our strong team. I am grateful to him for his many contributions to Hamilton’s success and wish him all the best.”

Albo added: “I am delighted to welcome Alex to the Group Executive Team. Since joining Hamilton in 2016, Alex has been a trusted advisor and instrumental in building our robust risk and actuarial culture. Alex will continue to uphold Hamilton’s high-quality risk and actuarial integrity and I look forward to working even more closely with him as we execute our strategy of building a global diversified specialty insurance and reinsurance company.”
