Argenta lands 40-year marine and energy vet from AXIS Re
Argenta Syndicate Management (ASML), a subsidiary of Argenta Holdings, has hired a senior leader from AXIS Re with over 40 years of experience in the energy and marine insurance market, as it looks to take advantage of opportunities emerging in this market.
Stephen Haynes (pictured) joins ASML as marine excess of loss underwriter. Based in London, he will report to Heath Callan, Argenta’s head of energy and marine insurance.
Haynes most recently held the position of head of global energy and marine reinsurance at AXIS Re. He joined AXIS following the acquisition of Novae where he held the role of class underwriter, marine and energy reinsurance. Prior to that, Haynes held senior underwriting positions at Platinum Re, St Paul Re and was class underwriter, marine and aviation reinsurance, at Catlin Underwriting Services. Haynes began his career in a number of broking positions principally involved in marine treaty and facultative placing and claims broking.
Callan said: “It’s been a challenging period for global energy and marine industries. The ongoing conflict in Ukraine, navigating energy transitions, and the evolving concerns surrounding Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) continues to challenge the energy sector - while the lingering impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent supply chain disruption, port congestion and crew issues has posed challenges in the marine industry. The constantly changing environment will bring new risk challenges in 2023.”
“Stephen’s deep understanding of the energy and marine sector, as well as his strong contacts in the industry, will ensure that we can provide our partners and clients with the support they need as they seek to mitigate and transfer their risks and take advantage of real market opportunities in the years ahead.”
Ian Burford, active underwriter and director of underwriting of ASML’s Syndicate 2121 and SPA 6134 commented: “I am delighted to welcome Stephen to Argenta. His appointment gives a clear signal of our commitment to develop our current energy and marine offering. With his specialty expertise and excellent track record, Stephen brings his great reputation in the energy and marine reinsurance market to Argenta, and will be a great addition to the team.”
