Allianz taps Liberty Mutual for top North America leadership post

The commercial specialty insurance wing of global insurer  Allianz, AGCS, has hired a long-serving senior executive of Liberty Mutual for a top leadership post vacated by its veteran of 23 years who has decided to leave Allianz.

Tracy Ryan (pictured), previously president, Global Risk Solutions North America for Liberty Mutual Group, has joined the Allianz Global Corporate & Specialty board of management as chief regions and markets officer for North America.

Ryan replaces William (Bill) Scaldaferri who has decided to step down from AGCS SE Board after 11 years and is leaving Allianz after 23 years.

Ryan has served in a variety of technical and leadership roles over nearly 30 years. Starting at Liberty Mutual as an actuary, she later led global account management teams, and then the company’s commercial insurance product management unit, before becoming executive vice president and chief claims officer for Global Risk Solutions in North America in 2016.

Scaldaferri joined Allianz Risk Transfer, Allianz’s Alternative Risk Transfer (ART) business, in 1999, being appointed chief executive officer of the ART Group in 2009. He has been a Member of the Board of Management of AGCS SE since 2012, and chief regions & markets officer for North America since 2016. During this latter period, he led the integration of Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company into AGCS, as well as the subsequent successful turnaround of AGCS’ North American business which now represents 48% of AGCS’s global business of €11.2 billion (gross written premium 2022).

Ryan is based in AGCS’s New York office, taking on Scaldaferri’s regional role as president and CEO of Allianz Global Risks US Insurance Company, AGCS’s primary North American carrier, with immediate effect and will join the AGCS SE Board from April 1, subject to the usual regulatory approvals.

AGCS CEO Joachim Mueller, said: “I want to thank Bill for his strong contribution to the success of our New AGCS transformation program which we introduced in 2020, as well as leading our North American region through many important phases from the Fireman’s Fund integration and portfolio remediation to the exceptionally difficult days of the pandemic. Prior to that, he played a leading role in establishing Allianz Risk Transfer as the market leader it is today in the alternative risk transfer segment. We all wish him every success as he takes the next step in his career. I am very happy to welcome Tracy as Bill’s successor. She brings a unique combination of leadership skills and deep expertise in our sector, from technical underwriting through to client and broker delivery in both North America and globally. I am sure she will build on the great foundations that Bill and his team have created in this region which is such a major part of AGCS’s global business.”
