SRA chair Haushofer passes reins to Law

As the 2024 Singapore International Reinsurance Conference (SIRC) concluded, the outgoing chair of the Singapore Reinsurance Association (SRA) Marc Haushofer formally handed over to the incoming chair Kenrick Law.

Addressing delegates, Haushofer expressed profound gratitude to the speakers, panellists, and organising teams. “Thank you very much,” he said, acknowledging the tireless efforts of the organisers, whose efficiency ensured the event’s success. “Without them, none of us would have been here,” he added.

As Haushofer relinquished his role, he noted that chairing the SRA for nearly a decade was “one of the most rewarding chapters of my career”. He commended his successor, Law, who has now taken over. He displays, in Haushofer’s words, “vision, passion and deep industry knowledge”.

Reflecting on his tenure, Haushofer remarked: “Together, we went head-on against challenges and celebrated milestones,” adding that his role felt akin to a “national service” for the reinsurance sector. For Haushofer, the SRA is not merely an organisation, but a closely-knit network of friends and professionals united by shared goals, he said.

“The SRA is not merely an organisation, but a closely-knit network of friends and professionals.”

Taking up the baton

Law, who has worked with Haushofer since 2016, praised his predecessor’s significant impact on SRA, crediting him with much of SIRC’s success. He noted Haushofer’s commitment to “pushing the boundary”, a trait that has driven attendance records at the conference, particularly this year.

Law emphasised Haushofer’s influence, stating: “I’ve witnessed the transformation of SRA. The progress has been nothing short of remarkable.”

The 2024 conference’s theme, “Revolutionize Re/insurance”, sparked a lot of discussions, particularly around technology, artificial intelligence in risk assessment, climate change, and talent management, Law said.

“Embracing the change is necessary,” he asserted. “It sets the pace for the future of our industry.” He particularly emphasised the importance of nurturing the next generation of industry leaders, saying: “If we don’t have good leaders to take us forward, it will be a challenging topic for us to address.”

Looking ahead, Law underscored the SRA’s dual commitment to sustainability and talent development. He shared his vision of Singapore’s reinsurance industry as “small yet impactful” with plans to foster international collaboration, innovation, and resilience.

He concluded by hinting at a superhero-inspired theme for the 2025 conference, symbolising resilience and adaptability which, in his view, are crucial for the future of reinsurance.

The 2024 conference was another milestone in reinforcing Singapore’s role as a global reinsurance hub. As Law summed up: “Connecting people, connecting ideas, and connecting expertise is exactly what we’re trying to do at SIRC.”
