Tesla sets roll-out of upgraded telemetric auto insurance scoring
Tesla is rolling out the upgraded telemetric driver scoring system for insured drivers across nearly the full swathe of states where it offers auto insurance.
Tesla added seven states to its planned roll-out timetable for the shift from version 1 to version 1.2 after having run the shift in pilot form in Texas and having already set dates for the newest state where it added an insurance offer.
Arizona, Colorado, Illinois, Maryland, Ohio, Oregon and Utah will make the switch to the upgraded system based on policy stat dates end-November or renewal dates pegged chiefly late January 2023 with one trailing into February. Nevada and Virginia have yet to be put in line for the shift, a review of Tesla online offer indicated.
The version 1.2 of Tesla's scoring system adds a new safety factor and updates to how driving behaviour is calculated and scores calculated.
Tesla added night driving as a safety factor, increased the grace period after autopilot disengages, updated measures for hard braking, aggressive turning and collision warnings and adjusted scoring to a miles-weighted average of the last 30 days. Tesla will also provide visualisations of trips in a timeline showing when specific events impacted a driver's score.
Tesla currently has its telemetric auto insurance offer available to Tesla owners in eleven states covering some 29.6% of the US population across a patchwork map of availability.
Tesla also offers insurance in California, although the telemetric options are not allowed in that jurisdiction.
Officials said in April that they hope to have an offer for 80% of US Tesla owners by year-end before looking to take its offer abroad.
