Reinsurance Association of America elects new leadership team for its board
The Reinsurance Association of America (RAA) has elected a new leadership team for its board of directors, at its 53rd annual meeting which was held on April 28, 2021.
Jed Rhoads, president and chief underwriting officer (CUO) at Markel Global Re, has been elected chair of the RAA board. Brian Young, president and chief executive officer (CEO) of Odyssey Group, was elected vice chair, while John Doucette, president and CEO for reinsurance at Everest Re Group, was named secretary-treasurer.
Rhoads leads Markel’s treaty and facultative reinsurance business from offices in the US, Bermuda, and the UK. He joined Markel in 2013, when Markel acquired Alterra Capital Holdings in Bermuda. He has held senior positions with Harbor Point Re, Chubb Re Bermuda, Overseas Partners Limited Bermuda (OPL), Stockton Re Bermuda and Sedgwick Re, Philadelphia. His first job in the industry was with the Kemper Reinsurance in 1981.
Young was appointed Odyssey’s president and CEO in April 2011. He has 32 years of industry experience, with the past 24 spent at Odyssey where he has held several senior underwriting and management roles, including the oversight of Odyssey’s Canadian, Latin American, London and Lloyd’s operations. In 2009 he became COO, assuming responsibility for all reinsurance and insurance operations worldwide.
Before joining Odyssey Group Young spent eight years at Transatlantic Reinsurance in both New York and London, working in the actuarial and treaty underwriting departments.
Before assuming his current role Doucette was CUO of Everest Re Group, before which he was head of enterprise risk management. He joined the Company in 2008 as executive vice president from Max Re Capital where he was president and chief underwriting officer of the P&C reinsurance division, responsible for new products and geographic expansion.
Before that he was an associate director at Swiss Re New Markets, a division of Swiss Re, holding various pricing, structuring and underwriting roles in connection with alternative risk transfer and structured products. He also spent time at Tillinghast as a consultant between 1989 and 1997.
