QBE cat losses and new reserves boost combined ratio to a full 98.8%

Australian-based global insurer  QBE suffered nat cat losses and wrote new reserves sufficient to knock down first half underwriting profits by three quarters, but took enough benefit from the bond market recovery to increase profits more than eight times over by the bottom line.
