Markel hires compliance officer from Faraday

Markel International, the specialist insurer, has appointed Simon French, formerly of Faraday Underwriting, as compliance officer.

He will report to Andrew Bailey, head of the legal and regulatory affairs department, who will increasingly concentrate on Group company secretarial and governance responsibilities whilst continuing to provide oversight for the compliance function.

French joins Markel from Faraday Underwriting and Faraday Reinsurance Company where he was employed as head of compliance following a role at Torus Underwriting Management as compliance officer and company secretary.

Prior to this French worked for QBE European Operations as its compliance manager.

Bailey said: “Simon’s appointment follows a period of considerable expansion for the company. His role will be key to our ‘second line of defence’, taking the lead in monitoring and improving Markel International’s arrangements for financial crime, compliance with best practice, meeting and exceeding Lloyd’s minimum standards across both Markel’s Lloyd’s and company market insurance activities and developing our oversight of ‘conduct risk’.”
