Markel hires Atradius senior underwriter to boost APAC trade credit

Specialist insurer Markel International has appointed Dillon Matthews as trade credit underwriter and senior risk analyst in Singapore to strengthen and broaden its Asia Pacific resources.

The new hire follows the addition of a surety capability to Markel’s trade credit and political risk business, and its investment in London, New York and Dubai, the company said in a statement.

In his new role, Matthews will focus on expanding Markel’s trade credit business in the region, including the development of specialist products, servicing existing client portfolios and growing broker and client relationships.

Matthews will report to Abhishek Chhajer, senior underwriter and head of trade credit in Singapore, who has led Markel’s trade credit business in the Asia Pacific region since 2011. He also joins underwriter Bennett Wong, appointed in 2015, and underwriting assistant Lynn Koh.

Prior to Joining Markel, Matthews was a senior underwriter at Atradius in its special products division, focusing on single situation credit risks and structured trade finance. He began his career in trade credit insurance in 2011 with Atradius in Cardiff, moving to Amsterdam in 2013 and on to Singapore in September 2015, where he was responsible for establishing the company’s Asia Pacific risk team.

"Dillon’s appointment reflects Markel’s continuing investment in our product lines on a global basis," said Ewa Rose, managing director of Markel’s trade credit, political risk and surety business.

"We see significant opportunities in the Asia Pacific region and we look to capitalise on the cross-selling opportunities that exist within Markel’s broader portfolio. Dillon’s broad underwriting experience will be a huge asset to our organisation and we are delighted to have him on board."

Markel's trade credit team in Singapore writes business throughout Asia and offers comprehensive non-payment coverage written on an excess of loss, multi-buyer as well as ground-up, specific buyer basis with emphasis on delivering specialist products including trade finance insurance solutions, contract frustration, political risk and non-trade deals.
