Irma claims reach $6.3bn in Florida
The total estimated insured losses caused by hurricane Irma reached $6.29 billion in Florida as of Dec. 4, 2017, according to data from the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation.
The total number of claims has reached 853,356, most of which (710,152) are residential property. Around 73 percent of total claims have been closed, according to the agency.
Hurricane Irma was the strongest hurricane observed in the Atlantic since Wilma in 2005 in terms of maximum sustained winds. Irma hammered much of Florida on Sunday, September 10, through the next day, with rain and winds that ripped off roofs, downed trees, caused widespread power outages, and flooded towns. Combined industry insured losses for Hurricane Irma for the US and the Caribbean will range from $32 billion to $50 billion, according to estimates from catastrophe modelling firm AIR Worldwide.
