HDI Global Specialty eyes Canada expansion with new PL underwriter

HDI Global Specialty has recruited Thierno Bah as national underwriting manager for professional liability in Canada, within its financial lines team.

Bah is responsible for expanding  HDI’s existing architects and engineers book and developing its errors and omissions offering in Canada.

He has over 13 years’ experience of working in the insurance industry and has been focused on underwriting professional lines for the last nine years. He joins from Travelers Canada where he was responsible for developing its architect and engineer’s portfolio.

HDI’s financial lines operation already has a strong presence in both professional indemnity insurance - including lawyers, contractors, architects, and engineers - and in public and private sector directors and officers insurance. It has traditionally focused on excess placements but in 2020 expanded its appetite to include primary exposures.

Oren Schemool, head of financial lines underwriting at HDI Global Specialty Canada, said Bah’s “appointment reflects our ambitions to grow and expand our offering across Canada in a number of key specialist areas. His experience and insights into this market will be a major asset as we look to expand our footprint and build upon our existing portfolio. We are committed to growing our professional liability capabilities and portfolio and will continue to build the strength of our team.”

Bah added: “The professional liability market provides a fantastic opportunity for HDI Global Speciality to grow. With the overall market estimated to be $1.2 billion, we expect to increase our market share in the coming years.”
