Aegon fills vacant global CTO position with Citigroup veteran
Dutch insurance group Aegon has hired a new chief technology officer (CTO) from Citigroup. The position has been vacant since June last year after Mark Bloom left the company to pursue other opportunities and continue his non-executive role at Freddie Mac.
Deborah Waters (pictured) will join the insurer as CTO and member of the management board of Aegon N.V.
Waters comes from Citigroup, where she held various technology leadership positions. Most recently, she served as Citi's global head of private bank operations and technology. Additionally, she was the head of inclusion and diversity for Citi’s Institutional Client Group Operations and Technology.
Waters has been with Citi for over 25 years. Prior to her current role, she led client centric and equities technology, supporting the Equities, Research, Commercial Bank, Citi Velocity, and Markets Sales businesses. She also served as the chief operating officer for the Markets Technology organisation during her tenure. Before moving to Markets Technology, Waters managed Markets and Operational Risk Technology for the organisation where she started as a developer of Risk solutions.
Bloom, who led Aegon's technology and innovation activities for more than five years, stepped down in June 2021 to pursue other opportunities. He joined Freddie Mac as non-executive board member in December 2019, and previously held various technology leadership positions at Citi and JP Morgan Chase.
Commenting on the appointment, Aegon chief executive Lard Friese, said: "We are very pleased that Deborah is joining our Management Board as Chief Technology Officer. Her broad experience in operations and technology, and her collaborative leadership style will be a great help in transforming our business.”
