ABI appoints new director of regulation, adds Swiss Re UKI CEO to board

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has named Charlotte Clark as new director of regulation, and appointed Swiss Re UK & Ireland chief executive Tavaziva Madzinga to its board.

Clark replaces Hugh Savill who is retiring at the end of the year. He will take up the role from October 2020 with executive responsibility for the ABI’s prudential and conduct regulation policy, its tax work and its international and trade policy.

Clark is currently the director of capability and learning at the Department for Work and Pensions, a role which she has held since April 2019. She was previously director of private pensions at DWP and head of pensions and savings at HM Treasury.

Madzinga has been Swiss Re's CEO for the UK and Ireland since January 2019. Recently he was managing director & market executive for Middle East and Africa (MEA) leading Swiss Re's reinsurance work in the region across both L&H and P&C lines of business.

Huw Evans, director general of ABI, said: “I’m delighted to welcome Charlotte Clark to the ABI. Charlotte is one of the leading civil servants of her generation and will bring with her a wealth of experience and an exceptional track record of delivery.

"I would also like to thank Hugh Savill for his commitment to the ABI over the past 16 years. Hugh has been an outstanding representative of our sector, both here and internationally. His judgement, intellect and wisdom will be much missed by all who deal with him.”

Clark commented: “I’m really delighted to be joining the team at the ABI. It is an organisation that I have enjoyed working with on many issues over the years. So it’s great to be joining it at a time of much change and new challenges.”

ABI board chair Jon Dye, chief executive, Allianz Insurance, said: “I am delighted to welcome Tava to the ABI Board. His experience, expertise and insight across the market will be invaluable as the insurance & long-term savings sector navigates some very challenging times over the year ahead.”

Madzinga added: "The ABI plays a pivotal role in our industry particularly at this time as we face many challenges, opportunities and uncertainty. We need to continue to position the industry as a force for societal good, resilience and progress. I am pleased to be joining the board and look forward to working with the management team and board in making the world more resilient.”
