HDI Global investing in Hong Kong and Asia-Pacific with a ‘fresh perspective’

Specialty lines insurer HDI Global is setting its sights on strategic growth in the Asia-Pacific region, positioning itself for expansion with a renewed focus on local expertise and leadership.

As part of this strategy, the company has announced significant leadership changes aimed at reinforcing its presence in Hong Kong and beyond. Michael Ahn will take on the role of chief executive officer of HDI Global SE Hong Kong, effective November 1, 2024, bringing with him over three decades of industry experience.

“These appointments are in line with our growth aspirations for the region.”

In a parallel move, Daniel Lau, the current chief executive officer of the Hong Kong branch, will transition to a new role as director of the Asia-Pacific Network, after 20 successful years in his current position. Lau, who has spent 30 years with HDI, has been instrumental in building the company’s presence in key markets, including Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, and South Korea.

In his new capacity, he will focus on driving growth in international programmes, leveraging his extensive regional experience and technical expertise to enhance HDI’s offerings across Asia-Pacific.

“These appointments are in line with our growth aspirations for the region,” said David Hullin, member of the HDI Global executive board, responsible for Europe (except Germany), Americas, ASEAN, South Africa and the Middle East.

“As CEO Michael will bring new insights and really drive our growth aspirations. As director of the Asia-Pacific Network, Daniel will share our leading International Programme capability with his extensive networks. The Asia-Pacific region is important to the HDI group and we are pleased with the opportunity to invest in local expertise,” Hullin added.

A new chapter

Stefan Feldmann, head of Asia-Pacific HDI Global and managing director, HDI Global Australia and HDI Global Specialty Australia and New Zealand, said: “I am personally looking forward to working closely with Michael, as we embark on this new chapter for our business in Asia-Pacific together. His fresh perspective and vast experience will further strengthen our position in the industry.

“At the same time, we extend our deepest gratitude to Daniel for his exceptional leadership and dedication during his tenure. His tireless commitment has left a lasting impact on the company, and we are very thankful for his contributions. I am delighted that Daniel will stay on and continue to share his experiences and grow our International Programme capability.”

Lau is excited about the next phase of his journey with HDI. He said: “Over my 30 years with HDI, I am extremely proud of the successful business we have built in Hong Kong and the great culture we’ve created as a team. I’m looking forward to this new opportunity and working with Michael on the next chapter of growth for HDI as a partner in transformation with our insurance community.”
