AXA backs launch of new construction-focused MGA led by ex-Munich Re veteran

A new specialist managing general agent (MGA) serving the construction sector is launching next month with capacity backing from AXA UK. It will be led by a former Munich Re veteran of 16 years, who also led and later sold specialist MGA Ensurance.

Acies MGU, a technology and data-driven managing general underwriter (MGU), is set to launch Phoenix Specialty. Phoenix has secured capacity backing from AXA UK as it launches with contractors all risks and contractors plant & equipment products, with further specialist products in the pipeline.

Phoenix Specialty will officially launch at this year's British Insurance Brokers’ Association conference (BIBA) on May 15 - 16 in Manchester.

Phoenix will be led by managing director Tim James (pictured), subject to regulatory approval. James led the development, growth and subsequent sale of Ensurance, a specialist construction and engineering MGA. Prior to that, he spent 16 years in senior and board-level roles at HSB - a Munich Re company.

James is joined by senior construction underwriter Milan Kosorin. Kosorin was previously the senior underwriter, energy and construction at Allianz, senior underwriter, engineering at Generali Global Corporate and Commercial and spent nearly ten years at AXA corporate solutions in various global construction underwriting roles.

The team also includes experienced construction underwriters Cameron Mclean, Elyse Gateson and Chantell Wilson.

James said: “Our mission at Phoenix Specialty is to establish a reputable global construction MGA by leveraging a dedicated team of highly experienced technical underwriters to deliver exceptional service. Our immediate priority is to establish a strong presence in the UK market before expanding our footprint internationally to meet the unique challenges faced by the construction industry.”

Mark Heath, CEO of Acies MGU, added: “This launch marks an exciting new milestone for Acies MGU as we continue to build out our portfolio of highly specialised MGAs which also includes Acies SME and Intangic MGA.

“In Phoenix, we have a team of highly qualified, experienced construction underwriters who are finely attuned to the fast-paced and complex construction market and the needs of their insurance and broker partners.  I’m excited to see Phoenix set a strong example of how we can achieve a clearer future in our industry with the delivery of sharper, more advanced solutions for our broker and insurer partners and their clients.”
