Marsh JLT Specialty Aviation Practice hires former Boeing executive Michael Tarling
There has been a reshuffle at Marsh’s aviation practice with the exit of key team members and the impending arrival of an experienced insurance executive from Boeing.
Michael Tarling, formerly assistant treasurer, risk management and insurance at Boeing, will join the Marsh JLT Specialty Aviation Practice next week as managing director and senior advisor. He will be based in Chicago.
Tarling previously worked at Marsh as a managing director from 2005 to 2011.
Before that he was senior vice president at Willis between 1994 and 2005, and prior to that he was director, manager global aviation claims, at Wellington (which later became Catlin) from 1978 to 1994.
As Tarling arrives the practice bids farewell to Mark Costin and Oyin Heath, who are both leaving to be senior partners at the recently launched global aviation and space re/insurance broker BGC Insurance Group (BGCI), which is a division of global brokerage firm BGC Partners.
Previously Costin was CEO of Marsh’s aviation and aerospace division. He joined Marsh from Willis Towers Watson in 2002.
Heath joined Marsh from Aon in 2012. She held the post of managing director and leader of the aerospace and manufacturer segments of the aviation and aerospace division.
More broadly insurers in the aviation sector have been affected by the worldwide grounding of the Boeing 737 Max fleet following two crashes of this type of aeroplane. In July AJ Gallagher estimated that the situation “could cost aviation insurers over $1bn combined”.
