Lemonade sues ONE Insurance and parent wefox over copying software
AI-powered insurtech firm Lemonade Insurance Company has filed a lawsuit against ONE Insurance, its parent wefox Group and founder Julian Teicke, over claims of it copying Lemonade’s app and website.
The filing accuses the defendants of copyright infringement, breach of contract, and violation of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act.
It alleges wefox created ONE by infringing Lemonade’s IP, and breaching its contractual obligations to Lemonade not to “copy content...to provide any service that is competitive...or to...create derivative works."
Lemonade CEO and co-founder Daniel Schreiber suggested that weft’s founders used aliases and bogus addresses to create phony Lemonade policies and initiate fictitious claims.
“They methodically reverse engineered Lemonade, and then used the bootlegged IP to create apps, websites and products that are facsimiles of Lemonade,” explained Schreiber.
Lemonade had asked them to stop in August, and claims that they continued probing its servers. Schreiber said a second letter was sent, which was again ignored.
“We believe in the tech revolution insurance is experiencing, and alongside many others, work hard to ensure regulators, investors, and the public believe in the integrity of these innovations,” Schreiber continued. “That’s why we hold ourselves to strict legal and ethical standards, and it’s why we call out those who do not.”
