Hiscox unveils reshuffle in reinsurance, ILS including hire from Ariel Re

Specialist insurer Hiscox has made three new appointments within its reinsurance and insurance-linked securities (ILS) division, including a new hire from Ariel Re.

Mike Schindel has been appointed head of North America, Hiscox Re & ILS. He succeeds Ross Nottingham, who was promoted to chair of North America in August. Schindel will continue to be based in Bermuda.

Schindel has been with Hiscox since 2009, beginning his career within the operations team before transitioning to a leadership role in the international underwriting team.

Following Schindel's appointment, Nick Orton has been promoted to head of international, based in London. He has been with Hiscox since 2012, most recently as a senior underwriter within the international team.

Finally, Daniel Vestergren has joined Hiscox Re & ILS as chair of International, with responsibility for driving the strategic direction of the international book. He will join the business in May 2019, and be based in Bermuda.

Vestergren succeeds Andrew Dolphin, who was recently promoted to chief operating officer for Hiscox Re & ILS.

Vestergren joins from Ariel Re, where he spent five years underwriting retro, specialty and international reinsurance. Prior to this, he was at Goldman Sachs where he focused on North America and international property catastrophe for Syndicate 1910.

Mike Krefta, CEO of Hiscox Re & ILS, commented: “It is always pleasing to see people build their careers at Hiscox, so I’m proud of Mike and Nick’s appointments and delighted to welcome Daniel. All three have an important part to play in building on the great momentum we already have in the business as we enter the busy renewals season.”
