England rugby match cancelled due to super typhoon Hagibis in Japan
England's World Cup rugby match against France, scheduled for Saturday, has been cancelled due to super typhoon Hagibis in Japan.
Scotland’s crucial match against Japan, scheduled for Sunday, hangs in the balance. If the match is cancelled, Scotland are likely to be knocked out of the tournament. England have already qualified for the quarter finals.
The cancellations could have important insurance implications, although potential losses are not yet clear.
Super Typhoon Hagibis, located approximately 1,345 kilometers (835 miles) south of Yokosuka, Japan, was tracking north at 22 kph (14 mph), according to a report by US professional services firm Aon. Animated satellite imagery shows a distinct symmetric eye surrounded by an outer eye-wall that has eroded except in the east and a slight wobble in the forward motion of the storm. The joint typhoon warning centre (JTWC) has assessed the initial intensity to be 260 kilometres an hour (160 miles per hour). It is a Category 5 on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale.
Last month, Typhoon Faxai caused widespread disruption in Japan, with hundreds of thousands of people left without power at one point. Insured losses for Faxai have been put in the range $3-9 billion by modelling firms.
